What Should I Do If A VAT Input Tax Claim Is Refused?

VAT Reclaim Refused

Anthony Galvin & Rebecca Hudson

Directors, Altion Law

Step One

The first thing to do is to understand why your claim for VAT has been rejected by HMRC. At Altion Law our team have vast experience in dealing with complex VAT disputes.  When HMRC disallow a VAT claim, it could be just the tip of the iceberg and may lead to other action more serious against the business.  So it is important to seek advice as soon as possible to understand the full implications of what is involved. Our experts will help you understand the position, and clearly guide you through the best steps.

Step Two

Once you are aware of why the VAT claim was rejected, you will then need to decide if you intend to challenge the decision. In most cases you will only have a limited period of time to challenge the matter.  So, if you intend to challenge the disallowed tax you need to be aware of the deadline to do so.

Step Three

If you are disputing the matter you will need to gather all evidence in support of your position. This may involve gathering your documents in support of your position or speaking with suppliers, transporters or other third parties to establish their version of events to help you understand what has happened.
